How I bought a domain and made over 40x my money back!

January 23rd, 2015

SPOILER! It was a fluke. I also always wanted to write a really click baity title.

The other day I was browsing hover.com, as one does, for domains. With all the new TLD’s out there I have been getting funny ones, or ones that I think I might use in the future. And for about 15-20 bucks a year you are not really breaking the bank.

So there I was searching, and noticed that pizza.club was not taken! The obvious book.club or salad.club were take, but how could someone not take pizza.club! ADD TO CART. I wasn’t sure what I would do with it, but I had to have it.

A few days pass and I get this email.

Dear Registrant:

Unfortunately, due to a technical difficulty during an internal transfer of a registry-reserved name, the domain name < pizza.club > was inadvertently made available for you to register. We have cancelled the registration of this domain name in order to correct the mistake. The official .CLUB ICANN approved Acceptable Use Policies and Terms of Service states that .Club Domains reserves the right, at its sole discretion and at any time and without limitation, to cancel any registration “to correct mistakes made by a registry operator” (http://www.nic.club/terms).

If you are like me, I take most emails from people I don’t know with a pretty large spoonful of salt. The portion that got me even more suspicion was this.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please contact me for a refund payment on the domain name registration fees you paid and an additional $500 for your inconvenience. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Essentially what happened was this domain slipped through the cracks and was never meant to be up for sale for $15, how do I know that? Well if you look at the price of it now, it is over 17k!

I was super hesitant I would never see that money, I mean who just offers up free money? Lo and behold, after some back and forth, they actually sent me the money. A total of $530USD, and with the Canadian dollar so low(Jan 2015), that worked out to over $600. Not to bad for an impulse domain purchase!

Moral of the story, buy up any single word domains you can! And just build something cool on there while you wait for someone to offer you money for it!
